Seems to be missing USB 3.0. And the 8GB of ram is upgradeable to 8GB?

Here is a CNET Video Review on this monitor Seems like a pretty decent monitor. CNET Gave it 3/5 stars.

If you don't wanna watch a video here is the good the bad and the bottom line.

The good: The HP 2311x includes the trifecta of connection options, all placed in an easily accessible spot. Don't expect world-beating performance, but for $230 it's quite good and even more impressive currently from Amazon.com for $180.

The bad: The monitor has no ergonomic support beyond tilt, its Movie and Gaming presets are too dark, and it has a plastic-feeling build quality. Some audio options would have been useful.

The bottom line: The HP 2311x is a great monitor deal, with good performance and a great assortment of connections for its price.

I am not too good at finding reviews on computers so we'll leave it at that.

Seems like a good deal, was able to find the computer and monitor on NewEgg

Monitor here at $169.99

And the computer here, albeit not new but refurbished for $389.99

Together (without looking at the shopping cart total) amount to $559.98.

Definitely seems to be a mid-range computer, could drop a low wattage video card in there and make a decent gaming rig.

Or could replace the power supply and drop a really nice video card in there... oh the possibilities!

"8GB DDR3 memory - For multitasking power, expandable to 8GB"

Does that mean it comes maxed out at 8GB RAM?

OR...

It comes with 8GB RAM and you can add up to 8GB more?

OR...

It comes with less than 8GB RAM and you can upgrade it to as much as 8GB?

My HP Quad Core desktop just died, again. This was the 2nd and last time.. I was told it wasn't worth fixing if it happened again, since it kept overheating and they were unable to stop the issue. Has anyone else had the same problems with HP desktops? I would love to try one again, and since I am not an online gamer, and now using my laptop so often, this one seems to me adequate for a desktop, if the overheating problem won't reoccur.

The specs make it a bit more clear:

Memory: 8GB DDR3 (PC3-10600)
Max Memory: 8GB+

So it's filled to the brim with all the memory it can take.

I don't see HDMI out on the desktop. There's a port on the monitor, but no out on the desktop. You can pick up a low end non-gaming HDMI vid card for $25, but really DVI would give you what you need since there's no audio on the monitor... unless of course you were running through a receiver?.

I have an extra HDMI out video card, so no big deal I guess, but for others who might be expecting it, you're going to be using DVI or VGA (blech).

Still a pretty good deal overall.

EDIT: Ooops... 300W power supply. If you're not a computer geek, get someone to help you count the watts of all the devices, because adding a video card might put you in the danger zone of having too little power available. 300W is pretty low (but not a big deal if you don't have all those extra open slots filled up with goodies).

So if it has an A6 processor, it must have an FM1 socket, right? Doesn't that mean that if I throw in a graphics card, a new PSU and an A8 processor, could this be a serviceable gaming rig?

It does in fact have an FM1 socket on the mobo....so yes you could.

I think at that point I would just build from scratch unless you have those parts lying around.

Oh, and looking around online the video card seems to about similar to an Nvidia 8800 GT, which is a gaming card... from 2007. Solid Plants VS Zombies gaming rig.

The 6530 is closer to an 8600GT. a long way behind an 8800GT.

The FM1 socket is also dead as all new trinity APUs will use the FM2 socket. Its a decent productivity machine and you can do light gaming or drop a 7750 for medium gaming. There's no point to buying one thinking you're gonna upgrade it beyond that though

Thats kind of rediculous. Desktops shouldn't over heat and its trivial to fix if they do. a couple 5 dollar fans and a 15 dollar heatsink should have fixed it

There are other kits there too that you might like better. This way you are getting better components and don't need to change everything out.

Had the same overheat problem with AMD inside an HP laptop. It killed the machine in less than 2 years.

I'm not well-versed in specs, but here's what I would want to do with this computer:

- Work from home via Internet dashboard. I'm assuming the processor speed and memory should be sufficient for that.

- Video editing/motion graphics. Adobe CS6. Premiere. PhotoShop. After Effects. Flash. Etc.

- Maintain iTunes, AppleTV libraries & playback to my television (via HDMI).

- Possibly run Revit or AutoCAD.

Will this computer support these applications, or do I need to keep looking around?

Who told you it wouldn't be worth repairing? If it's the processor, it likely just needs a new (and likely proper) application of heatsink compound and possibly a new heatsink. Both can be pretty cheap.

Have someone that actually knows computers look at it. It could be thermal paste, it could be the heatsink is not seated correctly, it could be the fan is working but the output is below spec, it could be software throttling the fan down to keep the system quiet. Basically it could be a multitude of things that just needs a good troubleshooter and not a lot of money. Everyone usually has a friend or relative that can work on computers- just find someone that knows what they are doing.

Thank you all! I took it to a computer repair store when it was first under warranty, and then when I lost it all after the warranty. Guys are great, and licensed Apple and HP repairs. The machine just ran hot, they gave me a new 1TB hard drive, new power supply, etc. They told me they have seen it with my desktop and warned me it would happen again. It took 10 months, and this time, I have it all on an external hard drive too.
Now it's just time to shop, and I must just be afraid of HP now. I almost bought this about 5 times today, but never pulled the trigger. Maybe next Wootoff
Thank you!

By any chance was you computer one of the HP slimline series?
One of these skinny ones. I made the mistake of buying one of these once and it was the worst engineered hunk of junk- I parted it out after- because the power supply was underpowered and the ventillation was horrible in the unit. HP is not perfect by any means, but none of the manufacturers are- the slimlines are complete junk and I would not count on them for keeping any important information. I bought a mid-tower case and reassembled the parts in that case (except for the MB)- and that computer is working great.
