Poll: Do you like retro technology?
  • 40.4% - Yes! I feel so cool when I use it! Sure wish it was easier to upgrade, though. 377
  • 15.5% - Well, it’s okay as a museum piece, but I’d never want to work with it. 145
  • 30.4% - No. Though I’ll make an exception for my Nintendo 64. But that’s as far as I go. 284
  • 10% - No, never. The bleeding edge is where I live. 93
  • 3.6% - My opinions are too complex! I'll explain my views in the comments. 34

Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

Depends on what were talking about. Sometimes the upgrades are worse than the previous generation

Even though I'm bleeding edge when it comes to computers, I still love my retro consoles. NES and SNES all the way

I like my new stuff but until every game I own is available on a virtual console playable with the original controller... I'm keeping my old consoles

I still have a black rotary dial Bell/Western Electric telephone. It works as well as it did 50 years ago. It's in the hall near the front door. I don't feel cool when I use it, it's used to answer calls and that's it. I hate rotary dialing.

It wasn't that long ago that I pulled out the old Nintendo and spent waaaaaaayyyyy too much time beating Zelda.

As a fact, that depends on what kinds of technology.

At my age I am retro technology. I have all kinds of artificial parts. When I was young you picked up the phone and told the operator to dial Wabash 3581, a 20" TV was wide screen and your parents were to straight if they didn't smoke. Our car got 10 mpg (that was good) and gas was .17 cents a gallon. Moms stayed at home and greeted you at the door when you got home from school or playing. I could ride my bike all over our big town of 1800 and if I got in trouble my mom knew it way before I got home.
That is retro.

In a lot of situations, yes. If I walk into a bar that is supposed to the Longbranch Saloon or a Victorian Irish pub, I don't want to see a 60" plasma TV and WiFi. If I have a den decorated with Edwardian furniture, I want to have a wind-up clock and a rotary phone. It all comes down to what's appropriate for the theme. That being said, a lot of time I like the feel of older tech. Heavier, more mechanical, metal, wood, and leather instead of plastic and cardboard. There's something reassuring about an old device that still works.
