Poll: Scientists develop a cybernetic implant that, when surgically implanted in your brain, allows you to mentally connect to the internet and cell phone networks. You in?
  • 29.7% - Hell. Yes. 633
  • 40.9% - Maybe. We’ll see if the early adopters keel over dead, first. 871
  • 7% - I don’t see an issue with it, but it wouldn’t be my thing. 149
  • 22.3% - No, no way. If this is the future, count me out. 475
2128 votes

Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

I'm just wondering what you need to do when they come out with the new model a year later..

And if you buy the Apple version you will need to send your head in to have the battery changed.

What happens when you get infected with a virus or other malware? Reboot? rm -rf?

Could you imagine the pop-ups? People getting into accidents while "internetting and driving"?

When your contract with your ISP expires, do they come and remove the hardware? If you go to jail, are you still allowed to keep it?

If you update the firmware and brick it, is your brain also bricked?

Ugh, I'm imagining a direct connection between people's brains and facebook. Nothing would ever get done!

My avatar wears a fez now. Fezzes are cool.

For answers to everyone's questions (ads, malware, etc.) read the book "Feed" by M.T. Anderson.

Seriously. Read it. Phenomenal book.

Read Tad Williams' "Otherland" series for what can happen if this ever becomes a reality.

I am a strong supporter of the Borg. I would gladly be a borg, but the hive mind of the collective differs greatly from the internet.

They shed their flaws, emotion, illogical and irrational thinking in favor of accomplishing common goals; acquisition of advanced technologies and immortality.

The borg are win.

We absolutely need a books.woot, like, right now.

I had a friend with a pacemaker in her brain, which made it possible for her to walk again. If this technology allows people with locked-in syndrome to communicate and interact with the world, I'm all for it; but for myself, I'm happy with my little old pay-as-you-go handset.

Spent a couple minutes thinking about negatives and couldn't come up with any without easy answers.
1. Facebook argument - Cellphones have already made checking facebook super easy. Reducing access cost probably wouldn't increase usage.
2. Misinformation - People have been lying since Ricky Gervais discovered the art.
3. Cost - Clearly the implant would connect via another service (e.g. cell phone tethering)
4. Software - There would be no software. Either the brain would be able to use the hardware or not. If it could then its use would adapt with the brain not based on external updates.

Or... You could restrict your view of the website to the main item and Woot!Plus items so you can avoid the brilliant humor altogether! They even made it easy for you by minimizing the amount of the description on the front page.

Everyone wins!
