Poll: Congratulations! You’ve been selected to crew humanity’s first starship that will travel to Alpha Centauri. Unfortunately, the limits of physics mean you will work on the ship until you die in transit over a hundred thousand years before it arrives. Would you still go?
  • 17.8% - Yes! 202
  • 44.4% - Maybe. Are we sure there’s no hyper sleep? Do I get to produce descendants that might make it? These questions need answering. 503
  • 15.7% - I look forward to reading about it, but I’ll stick around Earth. 178
  • 22.1% - No way. I don’t want to live out my days in a tiny metal tube in the pitch black of space. 251

Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

I don't know how anyone can be this indecisive. It's an election year. I want to get the hell away from these s'mores. I don't care if I die in transit, it's still better than having to listen to the debate over whether to vote for bad or worse.

Really it'd depend on if it is like travelling on a SciFi starship, or the size of a NASA shuttle. Cramped up in tight "space" does not sound enticing. Not really a way to tell the kids to go outside and play, or that you need some space.

Living your life permanently on a spaceship guarantees procreation. Hmmm...

If they trusted me with the button, I'd Quality Post the hell out of that.

If I go will the women have to go through a Clinger screening? A lot of the ones here are stage 5 Clingers.

Point of reference, are we talking about Alpha Centauri A or Alpha Centauri B? Alpha Centauri A and B are two of the three stars in Alpha Centauri - which is a star system, rather than a star. The third star within that system, Proxima Centauri, is actually the closest to Earth.

I'll gladly hop on a ship to Proxima Centauri or Alpha Centauri A but I wouldn't be caught dead traveling to Alpha Centauri B.

Wikipedia's entry regarding interstellar travel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstellar_travel - is quality reading if you have the time.
