Poll: The government offers you a part-time contract to pilot a drone in your free time and conduct surveillance operations across the globe from the comfort of your laptop. Would you do it?
  • 59.8% - Heck yeah! Helping my country! 970
  • 15.7% - Maybe. It’s only surveillance? I’m not going to be hurting anybody, right? 254
  • 11.2% - No, because I object to drones/surveillance/the government. 181
  • 13.4% - No, because I have better things to do. 217

Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

I don't care about anything but the fact that it would be a legit job working from home on a laptop.. Of course this isn't realistic but STILL.. would be nice =p

This is especially hilarious because I am looking up parts for building my own drone at this very moment. So, yea, definitely.

That was my thought as well! Making money, at home, on my laptop... that's how I'd like to spend most of my time anyway!

It all depends on the pay and the consequences. Are the drones armed or not and can they deliver Bacon.

Nothing is free but if you are lucky it can be inexpensive.

NO! With my computer skills I'd shoot my eye out.

It's enlightening that a combined 71.3% of responding wooters are gung-ho on global spying.

Scary actually.

I am pretty surprised by that. I hate the idea and hate even more that this is close to being a reality. (we are projected to have ~30,000 drones patrolling the US by 2020)

If I didn't take the job, someone with fewer scruples would. So I suppose I might as well earn some money for my family.

I would do it so long as it wasn't flying over the US. I have no problem with surveillance of any place outside the continental US.

I agree! But I'm a Russian, so it's inverted. I'm fine with spying on anywhere, EXCEPT Russia!

Do I get to blow stuff up, like Adam and Jaimie? If so, I'm in. If it's only spying then I'm out. I don't need someone else's drama in my life.

I completely agree. I do not agree with spying on anyone, even if I was getting paid to just sit in front of a laptop all day.

Really? Not anyone, ever, for any reason? How about a totalitarian regime trying to put down a large internal rebellion, and no one outside knows exactly what's going on because the government in power doesn't let reporters in? What about an extremist compound that has been stockpiling weapons, and the FBI are going to make a move on them, but don't know exactly how to proceed without knowing the layout inside? What about in the middle of military action overseas, and command needs to know enemy troop movement?

Lots of people read this, and instantly think of routine domestic surveillance, which I agree is wrong. But to extrapolate that to all spying is also wrong, in my view. Now, to be fair, I can't see the scenario being described ever being used unless they actually were attempting domestic surveillance, but honestly, but the question didn't specify. As such, I'd be in until such time as I discovered that the spying I was doing was of a type I disagreed with. At that point, it'd be time to start taking political action to change what our government was doing - that's how the system is supposed to work, right?

Is the drone compatible with a bacon press? Windows? Linux? Android? Oh My Frying Goodness!!! Too many choices. Why can't I get one with a long string attached.

But, it would be one of the coolest jobs every. Control the drone from EVERY room in the house. EVERY! Think about it.

Absolutely!

A lot easier to have them give me one to reverse-engineer ahead of time than it is to capture one later...
