They don't have these exact models, but lets compare the Samsung LN46A950 (LED) to the Samsung LN46A750 (CCFL), both are 46 inch panels. Out of the box, the CCFL display measured 184 watts, while the LED display measured 145. That's a difference of $8.41 per year. At that rate, it will take 22 years to pay off the difference. (Assuming today's Woot models have similar usage) That's IF you don't calibrate it either. Their calibrated figure actually places the CCFL wattage lower than the LED model.

But what about the extra heat the non-LED model puts off, causing your air conditioning to run more in the summer? ;)

I have the 32" version of the LCD TV and you know what I HATE about it?

The thing has no tactile buttons at all. The power switch, channel, etc buttons are all just touch sensitive areas in the lower right corner, and since the case is shiny, and they're dark gray and not backlit (even when the TV is on) you cannot see them AT ALL unless you get your face right up next to them at just the right angle.

Other than that, I like the TV and have used it for about 18 months so far with zero problems.

LCD TV's- you can feel the heat of the fluorescent bulbs. LED TV's are cool to run.

*Ahem* You'll need to run that LED TV for decades to make of the cost difference. I would not recommend making your decision on energy efficiency alone.

tljx wrote:"Here's the gist on the TVs: LED TVs generally have sharper images, thinner profiles, and are more energy efficient than LCD TVs."

Sharper images? Since when does the lighting method increase sharpness?

It doesn't. Sharpness is entirely predicated on the panel, not the back-lighting technology.

LEDs boast better energy efficiency, life-span and contrast ratio. CCFLs produce a more complete light spectrum, which generally produces better colors (LEDs have to be coated with filters to provide adequate color reproduction).

The only factor that can affect image quality - as it pertains to LED back-lights - is whether it's edge-lit or full array. The latter is typically preferred but, rare in lower-end LED TVs. Edge-lit TVs frequently result in irregular back-lighting, especially on larger panels; but, they do allow for thinner dimensions.

What is the return policy and warranty?

This extra cost is almost negligible and, even if it was significant, it would be offset by the reduction in heating costs during the winter.

Thanks, I had that same question. I would like a little more info though. The Samsung site says the LED has an "Ultra Clear panel" which is supposed to help with glare. The LCD says no such thing. Does anyone know how much of a difference the LED has with the Ultra Clear Panel?
I'm not a video snob, and while I would love to have the best picture, etc, I just care more about money right now (i.e. the LCD sounds much better to me). however, I don't want to spend even $10 on a TV that I can't watch during the day (or at night if the lights are on)

It looks like the LED is already sold out. So I guess my earlier question just relates to the LCD's glare...How bad is it?

I think the only way people can justify the price difference in LCD vs LED is by the fact that the LED bulb will last much longer than a LCD's bulb... However that fact pretty much becomes meaningless when you factor in the reality that most all the sets, whether LED or LCD will have capacitors crap out and kill the set well before the bulb dies.

So sad I missed out on the LED sold out now. To late for me.

I have this exact model (LED). I know its sold out now but I can confirm that the picture is nothing short of stunning. The apps are essentially junk...but as someone else pointed out...there are numerous other devices available for app use. PS3 is my preference. If you are using the set for apps, I would avoid the expensive Samsung Linkstick. I use the Rosewill RNX-N1 Wireless-N 2.0 Dongle. Very solid unit. Comes with a nice gooseneck adapter.

My LED model was delivered today! It was waiting at my back door when I got home from work. It is raining here, and they didn't cover it with any plastic. But I have enough roof overhang that it wasn't very wet.

The setup for my LED offered to update the firmware. I skipped it because I want to try the hacked firmware from SamyGO. They have a warning that the latest firmware prevents the unit from being able to use the hacked firmware.

I don't know what version firmware this comes with, but it is best to pass on the upgrade, for now. You can always do it later.

Edit: Mine says it has "software" version 001028.

Looks like mine has a stuck pixel. I have a green pixel in the upper left corner. None of the repair methods that I found on the internet worked. I will contact woot, but I doubt one bad pixel will result in any action from them.

Anyone else have any issue with their TV? We got us in, turned it on and could not navigate through the setup on the screen. The remote did not work even after putting brand new batteries in. Now the TV won't even turn on from the face of the screen. Now what?

You may wish to contact the manufacturer about this! If they cannot help you, please contact service@woot.com after that.

I'm just hanging out, really.
