can this record with a dead battery while plugged into the charger/usb? That's my biggest complaint about build in non-replacable batteries...

socks.mark wrote:The specs say 3X digital zoom.

Digital zoom and opitcal zoom are two VERY different things.

On most normal cameras (not camcorders), the lens would extend, and you'd get as good of a picture zoomed in as you would not zoomed in. This is optical zoom.

On a camcorder like this, when you zoom in, you're actually lowering the megapixels you're capturing. So it's equivalent to taking the picture with no zoom, then getting on your computer and zooming in on it. This is digital zoom.

This device only has digital zoom, which is less desirable.

Less desirable? How about outrageously bad? Digital zoom is a scam. It is merely in-camera cropping, which greatly degrades the image,

Can anyone with some experience tell me how this compares to the Sony Bloggie Touch that Woot had on sale for about the same price a little while ago?

I have a desktop iMac, and this seems like it would be a pain given the location of the USB ports on my machine. Anyone have an opinion on plugging into an iMac, both for power and transferring video?

A USB extension cable would be the obvious choice.

If you don't already have one laying around from something else, they only cost a buck or two.

Is this waterproof?

Specifically, can I put it in a toilet?

Thanks.

I would still rather have some digital zoom capabilities than have no zoom at all.

There were, again, mixed reviews, primarily about the poor touch screen. Sony digital consumer products always scare me, as they often have a bad case of "the proprietaries."

At this price point I do not expect this thing to last long under water. In fact it is only rated at 10 ft. If you really want to go under, you need a better depth rating and certainly you are going to pay more. I would consider this water resistant based solely on the reviews that have already been placed plus, the price. Water resistant is really great and I like that but again, you can not change out the battery and to me that is a big CON.

Let's look at what it really is and what it has to offer. No optical zoom. No problem for me, you should not expect that in a camera this price and of course this size. No flash. Big deal, I do not believe this camera was made to be a stand alone camera. I would not even think of buying this or any of the competitors products in this grouping as a stand alone. But these things do have a place for many. In your pocket and ready to go. Decent results in good light. Keeps you from missing some actions you may have otherwise. But again, when the battery goes and as all of them do, it will, you have to either trash it or send it back. I am willing to be the cost on battery replacement by sending it back is way more that it would be worth. So, just saying, internal batteries have some major drawbacks to many, me being one.

Well the fact does remain at today's technology, you are not going to see an optical zoom in a camera this size. Today, that is just not available. Not at the depth of these cameras anyway. So if an optical zoom is your sole priority this is certainly not for you. Frankly, even though I have a similar camera by Sony I do understand the importance of optics. That is why these things make great back up cameras and/or quick candid shots. If you want more than that, go to or stick with your hand held video cam with real optics. However, there is definitely a place for these type cameras.

I agree with most of your comment but would add to the mix by saying if the battery lasts a couple of years them maybe I got my money's worth out of a $40 camera.

The link provided in the previous message is the same card I just bought. The Amazon product page for this Samsung camcorder recommends a regular SDHC memory card, which is INCORRECT. You have to have the microSDHC card. A lot of folks bought the recommended bundle on Amazon, and they weren't happy about it. Amazon still hasn't corrected the page.

WOOT shipped me a couple W190's instead of W200's.

I want my additional 10 W's. Times 2.

I just opened my box now and also got the W190 instead of the W200. I haven't looked yet to see what the difference is between the two models. Do you know what the differences are(other than woot advertising to sell us one and that we received a different model)?

Looked at my 3 that I purchased. Also W190. Seems as if we have an issue here.

RE: W200 vs W190

There's no difference between the two model numbers. One was manufactured for a specific retailer so Samsung used a different part number. They are the same.

Sorry for the confusion.

W190
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-W190-5-5MP-Pocket-Camcorder/dp/B006KDQFLY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348505966&sr=8-1&keywords=w190+samsung

W200
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HMX-W200-Waterproof-Recording-2-4-inch/dp/tech-data/B004W81AI2/ref=de_a_smtd

It looks like the W200 has 1x optical zoom and is more expensive. I don't see any reference to W190 having the 1x optical zoom. The W190 also was supposed to come with a 4GB microSD card. So not exactly the same thing....

Can someone who also received a W190 please confirm that the record/pause feature works. Wiki answers has a post saying the w190 is missing this feature, but are "unsure about it" (and I'm skeptical they would remove this).

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_the_samsung_w190_and_w200

I would test it myself but my W190 arrived DOA. Charge light comes on, but even pressing the reset button after charging for hours doesn't work (the screen never lights and the device is never recognized on the computer).

I'd really like to be confirm the W190 is equivalent to the W200 before I contact Samsung again. Thanks!

Since these were sold as refurbished, they did not include the 4GB card and it was not advertised to include it.

The specs on our sale did not mention an optical zoom.

However, if you feel like you did not get the product advertised, you can email service@woot.com.

I got my two cameras in today. Both are w190s, and neither of them had memory cards.

Both seem to work so far. Not bad for $40. I plan to use these for a balloon launch.
