Just what I was looking for, but the last time I bought a refurb dvd player from Woot, I didn't use it till 6 months after I got it and it never worked. Left with a giant paperweight.

Costco - Saturday $100 NEW - bought it for the "web browser". Returning to Costco tommorow. nuff said.
As blu-ray / netflix machine its great.

I picked this up the last time it was offered. It works fine. My Netflix and other video streaming would cut out sometimes but that was because of my POS internet service CLEAR, not the player. I have better internet now and it works like a dream.

That's pretty much how it goes. If I use it right away, stuff works. If I wait and use it later, there isn't a snowball's chance it will light up like It's supposed to.

The reviews on Samsung's site are much better and there are more of them than on Amazon.

Sheesh! What is it with amateur scientists these days? Yes, there is a ray inside this gadget, in the form of a laser beam (the best kind of ray short of phaser, which hasn't been invented yet.)

Of course it's 3D, it's a Real Object, all real objects are three-dimensional, and you can walk around them. Although there's been some discussion as to whether reality is actually 11-dimensional or possibly two-dimensional.

If I reach into the ray, will it burn my hand?

There isn't enough room inside the mechanism to insert your hand. And if you extracted the laser the from the unit, it probably couldn't harm skin, but it would mess up your eyes.

No, we're talking about present audio and video to a small audience from encoded data pressed into the surface of a plastic disk, a process known as "playing" the disk.

My PS3 just tanked(YLOD) so this should be a good substitute for movies until I fix my aging PS3 On a side note, Can anybody tell me if I should just by a new PS3 or send mine into Sony to fix?(My PS3 is a fatty and plays PS2 games)

Geesh! Reading the Poor reviews on Amazon makes me wonder why anyone would buy this model. I guess that's why there are so many casinos in the mid-Atlantic.

I paid about 2/3 what sony would charge to have my (also fatty w/PS2) PS3 re-balled (not just re-flowed like some cheaper "shops" do) by a 3rd party, works like new, that was over a year ago now.

I am still in the same boat as you though, my second (slim) PS3 (used just for bluray) started grinding and scratching the crap out of discs, so I am in the market for something like this, but with these reviews I am not sure this is the one to go with :-/

This is a very slow machine. Prepare to witness your hair grow while waiting for Netflix to load. Blu-ray functions as expected. On screen keyboards are very un-friendly. Image quality is very good.

The BD-E5900 rocks... not sure why this one is a dud.. though, the apps and browsing is sluggish on E5900.. otherwise great machine that was also a $69 woot.

I bought this last time for my room. Works fine. I've used it for discs, Netflix, Vudu. I have a Samsung phone you can download an app to to act as a remote that works well. The web browser and apps I haven't played with much.

I would go to iFixit.com for some tools and instructions on fixing those. If you're up for it, reflowing motherboard solder is not too complicated, but you have to pay attention to what screws go where and the finer points about using a heat gun on electronics. This method worked for me for a Xbox 360 and a PS3.

I should also say that when reflowing did not work, there is a VERY complicated process of completely replacing processor solder called "reballing", which is the last resort after reflowing. I would never do this myself, but would go to a reputable place like www.quickfixcity.com, who would definitely do a better job of fixing a PS3 than Sony would, mostly because they use more stable lead-based solder.

... also, it's blue because blue is a higher frequency/shorter wavelength than red, hence can be focused to a smaller spot. Then more data can be placed and read from on the same sized surface. So it allows higher resolution than a standard (red laser) DVD.

So, why didn't they just start with blue? Because blue LED technology is newer than DVD technology. Pretty much as soon as blue laser diodes were available, work began on Blu-Ray.

I've been looking for a Blu-ray player for my mom for Christmas, and there have been a lot of Samsungs on sale. I've looked at the reviews for several of different models, and as mentioned previously, they're really bad.

I've sworn entirely off of Samsung's Blu-ray players at this point.

Bought this crap couple of weeks back and returned it yesterday. Wasn't working. It is peice of junk. Outdated. Broken. Samsung doesn't sell this anymore on their site.

I picked up one of the last samsung blu-ray players they had (different model number) and it was horrible. Wouldn't hold a connection to my wifi router (or wireless access point), wouldn't play blu-rays without major glitchy audio and video and when I paused for more than 30 seconds I had to restart the movie because it would lock up. Woot has great customer service and is taking care of it, but be warned - if this one is getting bad reviews you might want to walk away.

I've (overall) been very happy with the Samsung new products that I have purchased. Not as happy with the Samsung refurbs though - I am not sure if that is symptomatic of the refurb process? Or quality control issues in general?

I just purchased the Samsung BD-E5900 to replace a well-used BD-E5100 and have been very happy with the performance, both for BRD and Internet apps (Netflix and Pandora for me).

Caveat emptor, as always.

Thanks guys for the advice. I already did the reflow twice and this is the third YLOD so I figured I needed to do something. I'll look into the reballing. And I'll be looking elsewhere for another player.

I'm glad someone said it. Blu-ray isn't just a name they picked because it was some marketing exec's favorite color (like Bluetooth), it actually is somewhat related to the technology. Think of the embarassment the author of the write-up could have saved with a simple Wiki search for "Blu-Ray":

"While a DVD uses a 650 nm red laser, Blu-ray Disc uses a 405 nm "blue" laser diode. Note that even though the laser is called "blue", its color is actually in the violet range."

Having it re-balled by a shop who specializes in that, should cost less than a Sony repair, and likely last longer since all aftermarket shops re-ball with leaded, not lead-free solder.

Just got mine today and out of the box all the apps work except it couldn't play a DVD nor bluray disc. Called Samsung and had to do a reset in order for the player to work correctly (hold play/pause on the player for 10sec). Hope this info helps!
