Ah, lets see here, what do do we have here? It's a DVD player kids. We used to sit around and connect the three colored cables to our TVs to get our video signal. Now you have your bluetooths or bluray or whatever you call it and your HDMIs...why can't it be like the good old days, why?

My old CD player died. Can this be connected to an old stereo receiver to play CD's or is the encoding different?

Short answer: Yes.

Hm. Time for a video reality check. In my house, which is pretty average for the area:

20% of our videos are VHS, I'd venture a guess that most, if not all have deteriorated to the point they just need to be tossed.

20% are blu-ray. That number is increasing, but not as fast as we used to buy videos since streaming has come along.

60% of our remaining videos are good old fashioned DVD.

Now, the only big-screen we have is in the main entertainment room, the rest throughout the house are 24" or smaller. Even with HDTV, I'm going to have to say you're not going to see a huge difference in the video quality between a blu-ray and a DVD on those sets.

$18 plus shipping is not a bad deal to get the kids to watch Tangled for the thousandth time in their room.

Damn... If this were a Progressive Scan VCR I would be in for 3!

There are codes online for Proscan players to set them to region-free. I would be surprised if this model was not included.

This dvd player will play dvds and cds and all but it is really annoying without the remote.

If you don't have the remote you cannot skip ahead with a dvd or change the music track on a cd. (the only thing it does is play and stop from the front buttons)

For the price, this is a good deal. It's a very basic DVD player but will work well with a smaller tv in a bedroom or kids playroom.

If I can make a wishlish request for the Woot buyers: My parents old VCR has died, and they still have a shelf of VHS tapes, with recordings of weddings and graduations. How about selling a cheap VCR/DVD combo player one of these days? I'd be awfully tempted to buy one for them if you did! :-)

A DVD player is something I would barely classify as being "tech". If it were blu-ray maybe, but this is basically like putting a toaster on techwoot. This should be on sellout

Technically you can use three cables for the video: Wiki: YPbPr Component Video. I was a huge fan of component video years ago before I got my HDTV. Even on an SDTV, component video makes a huge difference. Colors are more accurate, there's less (no) static and everything is much sharper. I recommend using component video if it's available.

These can be had for the same price or a buck cheaper at our local Appli-tronics store. Got one a few years ago and you could hear the engine in it when playing discs. But they've probably got that designed out by now.

For $10 more or twice the price a real name brand can be had if that matters to you.

If you want a cheap unit for the barn or garage - this is it - go for it!

I bought a cheap $25 DVD player from Best Buy a few months ago but it wont play any of my Home Burned DVDs. If this one will I'm in.

A quick google didn't turn up anything so I'll pass. I need to replace the Toshiba in the bedroom: it's so old the motor has difficulties spinning up.

Just FYIz, this does play CD-R and DVD-R, along with DVD+RW/DVD-RW. It depends on the format of the users recordable DVDs, but we hope that helps!

I just bought one from cowboom and received it like three days ago. I wanted one for the computer monitor/tv in the guest room. Mine was only 6.99 plus shipping, I think, but it did not come with a remote or a cable so this might end up being a better deal.

I wish this was a vcr. I use mine several times a week and I am worried about how long they will last.

This unit has an S-VHS output! Perfect for people like me who still use this archaic technology! For those that have not used it in place of composite hookups, It's night and day difference! Way 'MO Betta! It's getting impossible to find it on any dvd players. Thank You Proscan!

I know plenty of people in my family would buy several VHS/DVD players if they became available. About two years ago WOOT had the combo on sale for about $50 and I bought three. I should have bought more (under different accts) I could have easily sold them.

HDMI really doesn't offer any real visual advantages over Component connections at DVD resolutions. For a DVD player, the major reason for preferring HDMI is the convenience of having one wire for audio and video. With a Component connection, you have to use 5 wires (Red/Green/Blue for Video, and Red/White for R/L audio). Some advanced TVs/monitors can also automatically switch to the HDMI input once the DVD player is turned on. But not having these frills don't impact on the video quality.

PS - don't even think of using Composite or SVideo connections if your TV has Component or HDMI inputs!

I'm getting one of these because the PS2 is loud and a pain in the ass to use.

I still have 3 functioning VCRs. They were all high-end so I refuse to throw them out, i.e. one has true Super VHS which approaches DVD quality. It also has amazing search capabilities. All my combo units die within months so I'd never buy them again. My last one was a Panasonic VCR/DVD recorder. Bought it refurbed for only $79. Lasted 10 months which was good consider than I used it 6-10 hrs every day.

I keep my VCRs because I have hundreds of VHS tapes I keep promising to convert...

BTW, if you want brand name combo VCR/DVD units at low prices, check out ecost.com. By brand name, I mean Sony, JVC, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc -- not Coby, Emerson, Funai, etc. Mostly refurbed though.

Yes, all DVD players can function as CD players but there are some things to consider:

1) Some, like this model, do not have a display where you can see the Track Number, repeat status, etc. You'll have to turn on the TV every time you want to see that info, or want to change something.

2) Some standard features may be missing, i.e. programmability, shuffle play, etc.

3) The signal processing algorithm will simply be adequate. Good CD players may have 1-bit processing, extra bits, etc, all which supposedly enhances the sound. Since this is a DVD player -- and a cheap one at that -- it will merely do the bare minimum to output sound.

This should be fine if the TV has all the required inputs, i.e. RCA composite A/V jacks at a minimum (the yellow/red/white ones). If your TV is older than that and only has an RF (aka antenna) input then you'll have to buy a something to convert AV signals to RF. Believe it or not, my parents have such a TV (CRT)...

Yep, just Google the model number and the word "hack" or "code." Then it's just a matter of entering a cryptic sequence of numbers on the remote. With some models, not only can you remove the Region Coding, but also disable copy protection schemes such as Macrovision. I was also able to turn on hidden features on one of my DVD player, i.e. the ability to play VCDs, which was inexplicable disabled for US sale.

Go to ecost.com. They have lots of combo models from brand names like Sony, JVC, Toshiba, etc. Some may even have DVD recorders. I bought a refurbed combo VCR/DVD recorder for only $79 a few years ago.

It depends. Older Composite connections did indeed use only one cable for video (Yellow is for video while Red/White is for R/L audio). Newer Component connections use 3 cables for video (Red/Green/Blue), and 2 for sound (standard Red/White, same as above). Separating the various components of a video signal into 3 separate wires results in a much cleaner transmission and purer signal.
